All 6 th grade students will attend a 50-minute presentation that reinforces the physical science standards
that they have reviewed in class. The presenter, Michelle White, has created a curriculum-based
presentation based on our current standards. The program is called May the Force Be with You. She will
conduct hands-on, visual demonstrations of how energy and force is all around us. She will use student
volunteers to get the students engaged and involved. This STEM presentation will combine all of the
standards we have covered for first semester, into a fun, engaging presentation.
Ja’Shon Burks has worked with the Batesville Singers for several years now. He is a very skilled choreographer and challenges the students by making the choreography more difficult each year. The entire competition show was learned in two weekends and the students were able to run all of their choreography with him on the last day. Ja’Shon helps the students polish their choreography as a group. He is an easy addition to our program and is a joy to work with. Thank you BAAC for helping to provide opportunities to work with skilled artists like Ja’Shon!
Robin McBride Scott hosted individual pottery workshops for all 5th grade classes on
November 1st and 2nd. In the hour-long workshops, Robin taught the students about Native
American pottery, its visual characteristics and functional features. She also taught them about
effigies and how making containers depicting the images of people or animals is a commonality
between the ancient native culture and today’s culture (i.e. a drinking vessel shaped like a
Native American tribal-style head vs. a plastic sippy cup shaped like Spiderman’s head; both are
effigies). Robin then guided the students through creating their own effigy bowls in the form of
birds. This project is continued in art class after Robin’s visit, as students paint the birds, read
Native American legends, and write their own legend concerning their effigy bird to serve as an
artist statement for their work.
